Around the nation: Intermountain announces plans for a new, 40-acre medical campus

Intermountain Healthcare has announced plans to begin building a new medical campus on a 40-acre site in Saratoga Springs, Utah, this year, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from the District of Columbia, North Carolina, and Utah.

  • District of Columbia: The Department of Homeland Security on Monday announced that government officials will not make routine immigration enforcement arrests at Covid-19 vaccination sites in the United States. The department said it will consider vaccination sites as "sensitive locations," meaning officials will generally view the sites as "off limits for enforcement actions," according to the Associated Press. The department said it will carry out enforcement actions at the sites only in "the most extraordinary of circumstances," and it urged all U.S. residents to get vaccinated against Covid-19. "It is a moral and public health imperative to ensure that all individuals residing in the United States have access to the vaccine," the department said, adding that it "is committed to ensuring that every individual who needs a vaccine can get one, regardless of their immigration status" (Associated Press, 2/1; Beitsch, The Hill, 2/1).
  • North Carolina: Premier has announced that Susan DeVore, the company's long-time CEO, will retire from the role effective June 30, and Michael Alkire, Premier's current president, will replace DeVore as CEO effective May 1. DeVore will remain with Premier for an additional two months before her retirement to help oversee the CEO transition, and she will stay on as an adviser to the company for two years. DeVore will no longer serve on Premier's board of directors, effective June 30 (Christ, Modern Healthcare, 2/2).
  • Utah: Intermountain Healthcare has announced plans to begin building a new medical campus on a 40-acre site in Saratoga Springs, Utah, this year. The health system said the campus initially will host a freestanding ED and an ambulatory surgical center. Jason Wilson, administrator at Intermountain American Fork (Utah) Hospital, said the new campus will help Intermountain "meet the needs of [a] rapidly growing community." He continued, "We recognize the importance of timely access to health care and are confident this project will bless the lives of many thousands in the years to come" (Paavola, Becker's Hospital Review, 2/1).
