Modern Healthcare on Saturday released its "100 Most Influential People in Healthcare" list for 2023, awarding the top spot to CMS Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure.
For the list, Modern Healthcare accepted nominations between June 5 and Aug. 16. Those submitting a nomination were required to:
1. Describe specific actions the nominee took this year to help the organization meet clinical, operational, and financial goals, and the measurable results that were achieved.
2. Describe specific steps the nominee has taken to improve the organization's culture, particularly regarding the workforce and its sense of belonging along with diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.
3. Describe specific actions the nominee has taken outside of the organization to be a leading voice in the industry, including efforts to effect change at a local or national level that benefit patients and communities.
Then, readers voted on a ballot of 300 names between Aug. 28 and Sept. 18. The senior editors of Modern Healthcare selected the list of the 100 most influential people in healthcare based on public nominations, reader voting, and input from Modern Healthcare staff.
According to Modern Healthcare, the list seeks "to honor healthcare leaders who wield influence and clout and are making an impact in the industry." The article noted that the list included not just leaders of health systems or insurance companies , but also executives in "technology, investment firms and advocacy groups."
Modern Healthcare included several hospital and health system leaders among the top 25 honorees for 2023:

12. Wright Lassiter III, CEO, CommonSpirit Health
14. Samuel Hazen, CEO, HCA Healthcare
15. Michael Dowling, president and CEO, Northwell Health

20. Gianrico Farrugia, president and CEO, Mayo Clinic
Modern Healthcare's list also featured leaders from other sectors of the healthcare industry, including government officials, leaders at insurance companies, and leaders at pharmaceutical companies. Those among the top 25 include:
