For much of the past decade, there was a common theme surrounding the relationship between hospitals and physician groups: Hospitals and health systems acquired independent physician practices, creating health system-owned medical groups. This was seen as a mutually beneficial agreement. Health systems shored up referral patterns and ensured more downstream revenue from community-based physician. Physicians received a more stable compensation arrangement and support for expensive practice investments like EHR implementation and MACRA support.
