Around the nation: Off-duty nurse saves highway motorcycle crash victim

RN Laura Miller was driving home from her shift at Hartford Hospital when she came upon the accident scene, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Connecticut, Indiana, and Georgia.

  • Connecticut: RN Laura Miller was driving home from her shift at Hartford Hospital when she came upon a motorcycle accident along the highway. After she pulled over, she saw the motorcyclist, Jorge Diaz, lying on the ground. Miller made sure he was covered and started assessing his injuries until paramedics arrived. Diaz recovered from significant injuries, including a broken arm and leg, largely thanks to Miller's actions, according to Diaz's trauma surgeon (Gutierrez, NBC Connecticut, 8/21).

  • Indiana: The scheduled auction of the former property of St. Joseph Hospital in Mishawaka has been postponed after an unspecified problem arose between the property owner and its neighbors, according to a spokesperson. The spokesperson said he hoped the issue could be resolved quickly and that the auction could be rescheduled soon (16 News Now, 8/21).

  • Georgia: On Aug. 28, Northside Hospital and Gwinnett Health System are scheduled to finalize their merger, the Atlanta Business Chronicle reports. The merger will expand Northside Hospital's system to over 1,600 inpatient beds and more than 250 outpatient locations. Debbie Mitcham, the longtime CFO of Northside Hospital, will be the new president and CEO of Northside's Gwinnett campuses (Mandel, Atlanta Business Chronicle, 8/21).
