The 10 best jobs in health care in 2020, according to US News


U.S. News & World Report has released its annual list of the "Best Healthcare Jobs" in 2020, with dentists topping the list.

Methodology

For the list, which includes 25 jobs total, U.S. News took into account each job's:

  • Employment rate;
  • Future job prospects;
  • Median salary;
  • Stress level;
  • 10-year growth percentage;
  • 10-year growth volume; and
  • Work-life balance.

The best jobs in health care

According to U.S. News, the 10 best jobs in health care in 2020 are:

  1. Dentist;
  2. Physician assistant;
  3. Orthodontist;
  4. Nurse practitioner;
  5. Physician;
  6. Speech-language pathologist;
  7. Oral and maxillofacial surgeon;
  8. Veterinarian;
  9. RN; and
  10. Physical therapist.

Health care jobs also accounted for eight of the top 10 jobs included on U.S. Newslist of the top 100 Best Jobs in America in 2020, which covers jobs in all sectors. The health care jobs that made the top 10 of the broader list include:

  • Dentist, at No. 2;
  • Physician assistant, at No. 3;
  • Orthodontist, at No. 4;
  • Nurse practitioner, at No. 5;
  • Physician, at No. 7;
  • Speech-language pathologist, at No. 8;
  • Oral and maxillofacial surgeon, at No. 9; and
  • Veterinarian, at No. 10.

In addition, health care jobs represent a majority of entries on U.S. News' 25 Best-Paying Jobs list, and accounted for the list's top 11 entries. Those 11 jobs are:

  1. Anesthesiologist;
  2. Surgeon;
  3. Oral and maxillofacial surgeon;
  4. Obstetrician and gynecologist;
  5. Orthodontist;
  6. Psychiatrist;
  7. Physician;
  8. Prosthodontist;
  9. Pediatrician;
  10. Dentist; and
  11. Nurse anesthetist.

Whitney Blair Wyckoff, senior editor for advice products at U.S. News, said, "The world has evolved significantly over the last 10 years with how we use and depend on technology." She continued, "So for students who love math and science, we have good news: Our 2020 U.S. News Best Jobs rankings is packed with health care, business and technology occupations."

While a lot of these occupations may require "a lot of schooling," Wyckoff noted, health care jobs also made up the majority of the jobs in U.S. News' list of best jobs without a college degree, U.S. News reports.
