Around the nation: IBM, Cleveland Clinic partner on AI for drug research and development

IBM and Cleveland Clinic announced they have launched a 10-year partnership aimed at leveraging advanced computing technology for drug development and more, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Massachusetts, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

  • Massachusetts: The Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard has named Emme Handy as senior adviser to the COO. Handy previously worked as senior director and director of financial planning at the Broad Institute for three years before serving as CFO for the city of Boston starting in January 2018 (Dumcius, Boston Business Journal, 3/29).
  • Ohio: Cleveland Clinic and IBM on Tuesday announced they have entered a 10-year partnership aimed at leveraging advanced computing technology to accelerate health care and life sciences research. Under the partnership, the organizations will establish a joint center called the Discovery Accelerator to support the Clinic's Global Center for Pathogen Research & Human Health by using artificial intelligence, hybrid cloud technologies, and quantum computing to analyze and generate data on drug development, population health, and other research areas (Snyder, Axios, 3/30; Vaidya, MedCity News, 3/30).
  • Pennsylvania: Temple University Hospital has agreed to acquire a cancer hospital in Philadelphia from Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA). Temple and CTCA said they anticipate the deal—which requires approval from the Pennsylvania Department of Health—to close by the end of June (Ellison, Becker's Hospital Review, 3/26).
