Around the nation: West Virginia offers $100 to young people to get vaccinated

West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice (R) on Monday announced that residents between the ages of 16 and 35 are being offered $100 in savings bonds to get a Covid-19 vaccine, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Maryland, North Carolina, and West Virginia.

  • Maryland: CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield has named Tich Changamire as CMO. Changamire most recently served as CMO for Humana Healthy Horizons in Louisiana. He previously served a professor of family medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine and the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, and as a medical officer in Zimbabwe (Jensik, Becker's Payer Issues, 4/26).
  • North Carolina: Hester Ford, who was believed to be the oldest American, died on Saturday at the age of either 115 or 116. Ford was born on Aug. 15 in either 1905 or 1904 in South Carolina, married her husband John Ford at 14, and had the first of her 12 children at age 15. In 1960, Ford and her husband moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, where Ford's husband died three years later. Ford lived in Charlotte for the rest of her life (Padnani, New York Times, 4/26).
  • West Virginia: Gov. Jim Justice (R) on Monday announced that residents between the ages of 16 and 35 are being offered $100 in savings bonds to get a Covid-19 vaccine. "Every single one of our young people—we're going to give a $100 savings bond to every single one [who] steps up and takes their vaccines," Justice said. Just over half of the 1.5 million West Virginia residents eligible for a Covid-19 vaccine have received at least one dose, Justice said (Lobosco/Smith, CNN, 4/26).
