America's 100 best hospitals, according to Fortune

IBM Watson Health and Fortune Magazine on Tuesday released their list of the top 100 hospitals and top 15 health systems in the United States, and 92 are Advisory Board members.

Cheat sheets: How hospital quality ratings work

Methodology

For the list, researchers with IBM Watson Health looked at public data for 2,675 short-term, acute care, nonfederal hospitals in the United States. The researchers analyzed Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review data, and certain measures and patient satisfaction data from CMS' Hospital Compare website.

Researchers then assigned hospitals and health systems three different scores:

  • A clinical outcomes score based on five measurements, including risk-adjusted mortality and complications, health care-associated infections, and 30-day mortality and readmission rates
  • An operational efficiency score based on four metrics for hospitals—ED throughput, severity-adjusted length of stay, Medicare spending per beneficiary, and adjusted inpatient expense per discharge—and three metrics for health systems (the same, but without the adjusted inpatient expense per discharge metric)
  • A patient experience score based on overall patient ratings from CMS' Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) tool

The researchers also had two additional scores solely for the individual hospital rankings:

  • A financial health score, based on a hospital's adjusted operating profit margin
  • A community health survey performance score—new this year—calculated as a percentage based on how well the hospital served as an "anchor institution" that supports local progress, how well it partnered with local organizations, and how well it provided critical preventive care and community health care
