Around the nation: CMS announces director of Center for Medicare

CMS on Tuesday announced that Meena Seshamani will be the next director of Center for Medicare in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from the District of Columbia, Missouri, and Pennsylvania.

  • District of Columbia: CMS announced on Monday that Meena Seshamani will be the new deputy administrator of CMS and director of Center for Medicare. Seshamani most recently served as VP of clinical care transformation at MedStar Health and helped lead HHS' review team during the Biden-Harris transition. Previously, she was the director of HHS' Office of Health Reform and helped implement the Affordable Care Act under former President Barack Obama. • Missouri: CoxHealth and Mercy Springfield over the Fourth of July weekend experienced a nearly 27% increase in the number of hospitalized Covid-19 patients. Amid the increase, Mercy Springfield faced a shortage of ventilators over the weekend, and CoxHealth currently does not have enough traveling nurses to assist patients. CEOs of both hospitals reached out on Twitter asking respiratory therapists to contact them and continue to send updates about their respective hospitals. • Pennsylvania: UPMC on July 1 named Elizabeth Wild president of Hillman Cancer Center. Wild most recently served as SVP of the cancer center. She succeeds Chuck Bogosta, EVP of UPMC. Bogosta is also president of UPMC's international division and remains on the board of the directors for Hillman Cancer Center. (Gooch, Becker's Hospital Review, 7/1)
