Around the nation: FDA appoints new CIO, launches digital transformation office

As part of an IT reorganization, FDA appointed a new CIO and announced the formation of the Office of Digital Transformation, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Connecticut, Maryland, and North Carolina.

  • Connecticut: Just two days after a woman filed a discrimination suit against Aetna, the insurer announced it will update its policy regarding coverage for fertility treatments—which required LGBTQ individuals to pay tens of thousands of dollars out of pocket but were offered to heterosexual individuals with no cost-sharing. According to an Aetna spokesperson, the woman's costs will now be covered, and Aetna will "review similar cases to ensure coverage decisions were made according to new requirements." (Tepper, Modern Healthcare, 9/15)
  • Maryland: FDA on Wednesday appointed Vid Desai as CIO and announced the formation of Office of Digital Transformation. According to a news release, the digital transformation office will report directly to the FDA commissioner and is tasked with maintaining FDA's IT, data management, and cybersecurity functions. As FDA's CIO, Desai—who joined FDA in August 2019 as its CTO—will lead the new office. (Drees, Becker's Health IT, 9/16)
  • North Carolina: Pardee UNC Health Care on Thursday announced that Brett English will join the organization as CFO on Oct. 11. In a Sept. 16 news release, president and CEO of Pardee UNC Health Care, Jay Kirby, said "[English's] level of health care experience guiding organizations through financial growth and operational expansion is tremendous. As Pardee continues to grow in response to our community and regional needs, we will rely on Brett's deep experience to help us manage this growth in a fiscally responsible manner." (Jensik, Becker's Hospital Review, 9/16)
