Around the nation: HHS debuts new overdose prevention strategy

HHS announced a new strategy to help address the overdose crisis in the United States, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from California, the District of Columbia, and Georgia.

  • California: Adventist Health on Wednesday announced that Kerry Heinrich will assume the role of CEO following Scott Reiner's departure. According to the organization, the transition should be completed by the beginning of 2022. During his tenure as CEO at Loma Linda University Medical Center, Heinrich was named one of Becker's Hospital Review's "135 Nonprofit Hospital and Health System CEOs to Know" for 2017. (Jensik, Becker's Hospital Review, 10/27)
  • District of Columbia: HHS on Wednesday released an overdose prevention strategy with a focus on utilizing evidence-based treatment, providing recovery support, and reducing harm. The strategy is based on five guiding principles—equity, data and evidence, coordination, collaboration and integration, and reducing stigma. "We're changing the way we address overdoses," HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra said. "Our new strategy focuses on people—putting the very individuals who have struggled with addiction in positions of power." (American Hospital Association, 10/27)
  • Georgia: CDC announced that Henry Walke will direct the agency's Center for Preparedness and Response, effective Nov. 7. In the past, Walke has served as incident manager for CDC's Covid-19 response and directed the Division of Preparedness and Emerging Infections at CDC's National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases. (American Hospital Association, 10/26)
