Around the nation: CDC adds 2 new countries to travel warning list

CDC added the Netherlands and Cayman Islands to its travel warning list due to "very high" levels of the coronavirus, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from California, Georgia, and Wyoming.

  • California: Departing Johnson & Johnson (J&J) CEO Alex Gorsky has joined Apple's board as the company continues to expand its health and wellness products. Gorsky in August announced that he was stepping down as J&J's CEO to become the company's executive chair in January 2022. "As a thoughtful and passionate leader, Alex has helped bring cutting-edge technologies to some of health care's most urgent and complex challenges," Apple chair Arthur Levinson said. "His voice and vision will help Apple continue to make a positive impact on people's lives through the power of technology." (Armental, Wall Street Journal, 11/9)
  • Georgia: CDC on Monday added the Netherlands and Cayman Islands to its travel warning list, citing "very high" levels of the coronavirus that reached the highest level on the agency's scale for the spread of the virus. Travelers are advised not to enter either country unless travel is unavoidable, in which case CDC has advised travelers to be fully vaccinated. However, with the "current situation" in those countries, "even fully vaccinated travelers may be at risk for getting and spreading [coronavirus] variants," CDC said. (Schnell, The Hill, 11/10)
  • Wyoming: SageWest Health Care—part of LifePoint Health—on Wednesday named John Whiteside as CEO, effective Dec. 6. Whiteside has been serving as CEO of Los Alamos Medical Center, another LifePoint facility. Before that, he was COO of Mercy Regional Medical Center and assistant administrator at Putnam Community Medical Center and served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 10 years.
