Around the nation: Digital pharmacy Capsule reports likely 'password spraying' hack

Capsule reported a network server breach that affected over 27,000 people, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Florida and New York.

  • Florida: HCA Florida Healthcare on Monday named Suha "Sue" DeLeon CNO for HCA Florida West Marion Hospital, effective immediately. With the appointment, DeLeon returns to West Marion Hospital after serving in various leadership roles with the hospital for 11 years earlier in her career. Previously, DeLeon served as assistant CNO at HCA Florida Memorial Hospital. Most recently, she served as CNO of HCA Florida Citrus Hospital. (Bean, Becker's Hospital Review, 6/6)
  • New York: Capsule, a digital pharmacy that delivers medications to patients, on Friday reported a data breach to HHS' Office for Civil Rights. According to the company, the breach, which affected more than 27,000 people, was likely a result of "password spraying"—a term for an attack that uses login information from other companies' data breaches to attempt to access user's accounts. Under federal law, the agency secretary is required to disclose any breach of unsecured protected health information affecting 500 or more people. Following the breach, an unnamed third-party cybersecurity firm determined the breach was not a result of any vulnerability in the company's security infrastructure, according to a company spokesperson. • New York: Kevin Casey on Monday stepped down as president of Rochester General Hospital (RGH) to return to his clinical gastroenterology practice at Rochester Regional Health (RRH). According to RRH spokesperson Cristina Domingues, RGH is currently conducting a nationwide search for a new president. RRH has appointed EVP and chief service lines officer Amy Craib as its interim president. (Gooch, Becker's Hospital Review, 6/6)
