The top risers on Newsweek's 'World's Best Hospitals' list

Newsweek recently released its list of the "World's Best Hospitals" for 2023.

Methodology

Newsweek, in collaboration with global market research and consumer data company Statista, formed an expert panel of medical professionals to assess more than 2,300 hospitals in 28 countries.

To make its assessments, the panel used data from four sources:

  1. Hospital recommendations provided by a survey of over 80,000 medical experts, including physicians, hospital managers, and healthcare professionals (49% of a hospital's total score)
  2. Patient experience survey data (14.5% of a hospital's total score)
  3. Hospital quality metrics, such as data on quality of treatment and hygiene measures (29% of a hospital's total score)
  4. PROMs implementation survey, defined as standardized, validated questionnaires completed by patients to measure their perception of their functional well-being and quality of life (2.5% of a hospital's total score)

The panel used the data to generate several rankings, including a list of best hospitals within each country and an overall list of the top 250 hospitals worldwide.

The biggest risers in the top 50

Compared to 2022's list, only one hospital — Hospitals of the University of Pennsylvania – Penn Presbyterian — newly entered the top 50. Here are the U.S. hospitals that saw a rise in the top 50 rankings in 2023, compared to 2022:

  • The Johns Hopkins Hospital, which rose from sixth to fourth
  • Stanford Health Care – Stanford Hospital, which rose from 20th to 16th
  • Northwestern Memorial Hospital, which rose from 28th to 21st
  • The Mount Sinai Hospital, which rose from 29th to 23rd
  • University of Michigan Hospitals Michigan Medicine, which rose from 36th to 33rd
  • Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, which rose from 39th to 35th
  • UCSF Medical Center, which rose from 48th to 44th
