Around the nation: Cigna will exit 2 health insurance exchange markets

Cigna on Monday announced it will stop all health insurance exchange sales in Kansas and Missouri and will expand its presence in North Carolina in 2024, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

  • Kansas/Missouri/North Carolina: Cigna on Monday announced it will stop all health insurance exchange sales in Kansas and Missouri and will expand its presence in North Carolina in 2024. Next year, Cigna will participate in health insurance exchanges in 350 counties across 14 states, including in an additional 15 counties in North Carolina, and has outlined plans to sell exchange policies in 20 states by 2025. (Tepper, Modern Healthcare, 8/28)
  • Maryland: CMS has fined three Medicare Advantage plans this month for overcharging their members. Specifically, CMS fined AultCare, EmblemHealth, and Moda Health Plan for various infractions resulting from faulty technology systems that overcharged beneficiaries. (Herman, STAT, 8/28)
  • Tennessee: A new study from Trilliant Health found that around 89% of telehealth visits nationwide don't require an in-person follow-up visit for the same clinical reason within one week. Trilliant looked at its national all-payer claims data from the second quarter of 2021 through the third quarter of 2022 for patients who utilized telehealth and found that 11.1% of telehealth appointments required an in-person follow-up for the same medical reason within a week. (Talaga, Becker's Health IT, 8/28)
