Around the nation: Rural Pennsylvania hospital turns to GoFundMe to stay open

Bucktail Medical Center (BMC) has started a GoFundMe campaign attempting to raise $1.5 million after two "catastrophic" events strained the hospital's finances, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from the District of Columbia, Florida, and Pennsylvania.

  • District of Columbia: HHS on Monday issued an alert to healthcare organizations about a vulnerability in ManageEngine products that can allow a hacker to perform a remote code execution — something North Korean-backed actors are reportedly using to target healthcare entities in both Europe and the United States. HHS' Health Sector Cybersecurity Coordination Center is strongly encouraging healthcare organizations to apply a recommended update as soon as they can to avoid being compromised. (AHA News, 9/19)
  • Florida: The University of Florida Health last week announced it has acquired Flagler Health+ and will rename Flagler as UF Health St. Johns, with the flagship hospital being named UF Health Flagler Hospital. No layoffs are planned as a result of the acquisition and financial details are unavailable. (Modern Healthcare, 9/15)
  • Pennsylvania: BMC in Renovo, Pennsylvania has started a GoFundMe campaign attempting to raise $1.5 million after two "catastrophic" events hurt the hospital's finances. BMC is a 16-bed critical access hospital that also has a 43-bed nursing home and is the only hospital in Clinton County, Pennsylvania. BMC CEO Tim Reeves said the hospital recently learned its federal employee retention credit payment of $381,941 is "delayed indefinitely" and that Pennsylvania's health department wants a $255,467 reimbursement for care delivered during fiscal year 2018-2019. Reeves added the hospital has also lost around $150,000 per month for the last year because their costs have exceeded reimbursements. Small rural hospitals "are being forced to close because they are not paid enough to cover the cost of delivering care to patients in rural areas," Reeves wrote in the GoFundMe campaign. So far, the campaign has raised just over $15,000. (Fiore, MedPage Today, 9/13)
