Methodology

To create the list, PINC AI researchers analyzed data from 2,601 short-term, acute care, non-federal U.S. hospitals. Information was collected from Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review data, and CMS' Hospital Compare website.

To measure performance, hospitals were evaluated in five domains:

• Clinical outcomes, including risk-adjusted IP mortality, risk-adjusted complications, healthcare associated infections (HAIs), 30-day mortality, and 30-day readmissions
• Operational efficiency, including severity adjusted length of stay, Medicare spending per beneficiary, and adjusted inpatient expense per discharge
• Patient experience, which reflects the overall patient rating from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey tool
• Financial health, which considers an organization's adjusted operating profit margin
• Community health survey performance, which is based on a survey developed by the Bloomberg American Health Initiative and the Center for Health Equity at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health

Hospitals scored between one and five stars in each domain. Some hospitals in the top 100 also received additional awards known as the Everest Award and the Community Champion Award.

Everest Award winners have the highest current performance and the fastest long-term improvement in five years of trend data. Community Champion Award winners serve a higher proportion of patients with significant social need and are recognized for providing excellent equitable care.

Fortune and PINC AI separated the final list of top hospitals into five categories: major teaching, teaching, large community, medium community, and small community.

Commentary

When comparing the list's top performers to similar peer hospitals, the researchers found that top performers had:

• 39% fewer inpatient deaths
• 26.6% fewer patients with complications
• 30.6% fewer HAIs
• 21.1% lower inpatient expense per discharge
•  0.5-day shorter average length of stay
• Higher patient experience scores, with a top-box HCAHPS score of 73% vs. 67% for peer hospitals

Overall, researchers found that if all hospitals in the country performed as well as the top 100, over 350,000 additional patient lives could be saved, over 607,000 patients would avoid in-hospital complications, and over 16,000 patients would avoid readmissions within 30 days of a hospital say. These improvements would also help hospitals save over $17.6 billion.
