TIME on Wednesday released its "Best Inventions of 2024" list, including 37 inventions that have healthcare implications.

To determine 2024's best inventions, TIME  received nominations through an online application process, along with nominations from TIME's editors and correspondents around the world. TIME  evaluated nominees on several key factors, including originality, efficacy, ambition, and impact. TIME  also paid special attention to growing fields like healthcare, artificial intelligence (AI), and green energy, ultimately creating a list of 200 inventions.

TIME's top healthcare-related inventions for 2024

The 37 inventions that have healthcare implications included on TIME's list are:

  • Abridge, an AI-powered documentation platform that automatically records conversations with patients and creates a summary formatted for medical records
  • ALZpath pTau217 Antibody, a blood test for Alzheimer's disease
  • Amgen Imdelltra, a drug that can reduce tumor size and extend the lives of patients with small cell lung cancer
  • ArteraAI Multimodal Artificial Intelligence, a platform that uses AI combined with a dataset of patient records and biopsy images to create a targeted treatment plan for prostate cancer patients
  • Aspivix Carevix, a suction-based alternative to the tenaculum that significantly reduces pain and bleeding during IUD insertion
  • Asensus Surgical AugmentOR Portal, which allows surgeons to analyze past performance based on AI-generated reports using analytics from surgical robots and associated cameras
  • AstraZeneca FluMist, the first at-home nasal flu vaccine
  • Bristol Myers Squibb Cobenfy, a drug aimed at reducing schizophrenia symptoms
  • Cabinet Health, a subscription pharmacy that aims to reduce plastic waste by offering medications in reusable, stackable glass containers delivered in compostable packaging
  • Dandi IVF Care Kit, a kit that includes a heating pad with a dedicated progesterone vial pocket, a cooling pad to numb the injection site, shot targets to help users accurately inject, a hands-free supply belt to hold everything, and a massage ball to disperse internal progesterone clumping knots

  • Laguna Insight, an AI system aimed at reducing administrative overhead by summarizing key information about a patient ahead of calls and offering real-time insights to care managers and their supervisors on topics like empathy and language appropriateness
  • Laifen Wave Toothbrush, an electric toothbrush that allows users to adjust oscillation range, speed, and vibration strength through an app
  • Masimo W1 Medical, a watch that monitors the perfusion index of a person, how well their blood is circulating, their SpO2, and their pulse rate every second
  • Montage Health Ohana Center, a behavioral health center designed around placing patients in nature
  • Moonbird, a meditation device aimed at helping people fall asleep
  • Northwell Health Double Neural Bypass, a first-of-its-kind surgery in which scientists implant microchips into a patient's brain to connect their thoughts to arm and hand movement
