Methodology

For the list, Leapfrog sorted hospitals into four categories and compared them to their peers. The four categories were:

• Children's hospitals
• General hospitals
• Rural hospitals
• Teaching hospitals

To be eligible for recognition on the list, hospitals were required to:

• Meet Leapfrog's standard for computerized physician order entry
• Meet Leapfrog's standard for ICU physician staffing
• Comply with Leapfrog's "Never Events" policy
• Meet or make progress toward achieving Leapfrog's standard for billing ethics
• Meet or make progress toward achieving Leapfrog's standard for informed consent
• Meet or make progress toward achieving Leapfrog's standard for pediatric patient experience (children's hospitals only)
• Meet or make progress toward achieving Leapfrog's pediatric CT radiation dose standard for head and abdomen/pelvis scans (children's hospitals only)
• Meet Leapfrog's standard for adult and pediatric complex surgery (excluding children's hospitals)
• Report on all applicable measures and meet Leapfrog's standards on at least 40% to 60% of those measures, depending on category
• Have an "A" grade on Leapfrog's most recent safety grade rating (excluding children's hospitals, which are not eligible for safety grade ratings)
• Satisfy the Top Hospital Selection Committee's qualitative review (excluding children's hospitals)
