Methodology

For the list, Modern Healthcare accepted nominations between July 29 and Oct. 7. Individuals who submitted a nomination were required to:

1. Describe specific actions the nominee has taken in the past year to help their organization meet clinical, operational, and financial goals, along with the measurable results that were achieved.
2. Describe specific steps the nominee has taken over the past year to improve their organization's culture, such as through workforce retention or employee development programs, as well as the measurable results achieved.
3. Describe specific actions the nominee has taken outside of their organization over the past year to be a leading voice in the industry, including efforts to effect change that benefits patients and communities at a local or national level.

The list's selection and rankings were determined by Modern Healthcare's senior editors. Overall, there were 73 repeat honorees and 27 first-time honorees, something that Modern Healthcare called "a sign of change in the industry and a reflection of the people and organizations whose influence has grown in the past 12 months."
