Around the nation: Judge orders HHS to restore webpages and datasets

U.S District Judge John Bates has ordered federal health agencies to restore webpages and public health datasets that were originally removed following an executive order from President Donald Trump, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from the District of Columbia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island.

  • District of Columbia: U.S. District Judge John Bates has ordered HHS, CDC, and FDA to restore webpages and public health datasets that were originally removed after an executive order from President Donald Trump. Last month, Trump issued executive orders ending funding for "gender ideology" and "diversity, equity, and inclusion" across the federal government, which led to federal health agencies removing thousands of webpages. Bates' ruling was in response to a lawsuit filed by Doctors for America (DFA), a nonprofit physician group. "This opinion has documented the harm DFA members have suffered and will continue to suffer absent intervention, but the harm extends beyond them," Bates said. "DFA has also supplied declarations from doctors around the country who, although not DFA members themselves, are representative of the widespread disruption that defendants' abrupt removal of these critical healthcare materials has caused." • New Jersey: Becton Dickinson (BD) last week announced plans to break off its biosciences and diagnostic solutions business to focus more on the medtech sector. According to BD, the split could take the form of a sale, spinoff, or another transaction and is expected to close in 2026. The remaining business, which is being called New BD internally, will operate in four segments: medical essentials, connected care, biopharma systems, and interventional. Interventional includes urology, critical care, peripheral interventions, and surgery. Tom Polen, the company's chair, CEO, and president, said New BD will invest in research and development and pursue mergers and acquisitions. For the past five years, BD has been focused on "transforming into a faster growing, more profitable organization" by moving its portfolio mix to higher-growth markets and introducing new products. • Pennsylvania/Rhode Island: Duquesne University and CVS Pharmacy are launching a new program to help support CVS workers who are pursuing a Doctor of Pharmacy degree online through Duquesne. Through the program, eligible CVS workers will be able to get a 50% tuition scholarship that they can combine with existing CVS tuition reimbursement options. The scholarship aims to reduce barriers to higher education, especially in underserved communities, and help combat the national pharmacist shortage. Duquesne's online pharmacy program curriculum will also help employees balance their career, education, and personal commitments. (Murphy, Becker's Hospital Review, 2/5)
