The top hospitals for patient safety, according to Healthgrades

Healthgrades on Tuesday announced the winners of its 2025 Patient Safety Excellence Award, recognizing hospitals that "excel at providing top-quality care while preventing serious safety events during hospital stays."

Details on the award

The Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award is based on an analysis of inpatient Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data that measures a hospital's clinical performance across 13 different patient safety indicators (PSIs), which each represent a serious, potentially preventable complication.

To be eligible for the award, hospitals were required to meet certain clinical quality thresholds, have no instances of a foreign object being left behind during a procedure, and report data on at least seven out of eight core PSIs.

The top 10% of evaluated hospitals receive the Patient Safety Excellence Award, and this year, 442 hospitals from 40 states were awarded the honor.

According to a Healthgrades analysis, patients at awarded hospitals were less likely to experience several safety events than patients at hospitals that were not recognized, including:

  • In-hospital fall resulting in fracture (54% less likely)
  • Collapsed lung due to a procedure or surgery in or around the chest (54.8% less likely)
  • Pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital (69.4% less likely)
  • Catheter-related bloodstream infections in the hospital (72% less likely)

"As one of the most important aspects of hospital quality, patient safety should always be a top consideration for consumers seeking the best care possible," said Debra Gradick, senior physician consultant at Healthgrades. "Healthgrades' Patient Safety Excellence Award offers transparent, data-driven insights on hospitals that consistently place patient safety at the forefront and deliver exceptional results in this aspect of care. With this information, consumers can feel confident they are making an informed decision about their healthcare."
