Meet the 9 healthcare leaders on TIME's 'Most Influential People' list

TIME on Wednesday released its annual "100 Most Influential People" list, which includes several people who have impacted healthcare.

This year, TIME recognized people in six categories:

  • Artists
  • Icons
  • Leaders
  • Titans
  • Pioneers
  • Innovators

The list included individuals, listed in alphabetical order below, who have affected healthcare, including:

  • Julie Burkhart, who opened Wellspring Health Access in 2022, the only full-service abortion clinic in Wyoming at the time.
  • Tomas Cihlar and Wesley Sundquist, a biochemist at the University of Utah and a virologist at Gilead, respectively, who worked to develop lenacapavir, a twice-yearly therapy that prevents HIV infection in those at high risk.
  • Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the World Health Organization.
  • Christian Happi, who started the African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases, which aims to educate future generations of African scientists and has helped train thousands of frontline scientists from across Africa to respond to diseases like COVID-19, mpox, and Ebola.
  • Robert F. Kennedy Jr., secretary of HHS.
  • Reshma Kewalramani, CEO of Vertex Pharmaceuticals, which recently secured the first-ever FDA approval for a CRISPR-based therapy that treats sickle cell disease.
  • Robert Montgomery, a surgeon who performed the first successful genetically modified pig-to-human kidney transplant in 2021, and who in 2024 performed a transplant on a woman who became the longest-living recipient of a genetically engineered pig kidney.
  • Allison Sesso, who runs Undue Medical Debt, a company that buys and forgives medical debt and has, as of 2024, forgiven over $14 billion in debt.
  • President Donald Trump, who has signed a variety of executive orders that have related to healthcare and implemented worldwide tariffs that could have a significant impact on the healthcare industry, including potential tariffs on pharmaceutical imports.
