Rates of pregnancy-related complications are increasing in the U.S., and Black women are three times more likely to die from those complications than white women. In Philadelphia, the disparity between Black and white women is even more pronounced – the risk of death for Black women is four times that of their white counterparts. Because of this discrepancy, Penn Medicine set a goal for fiscal year 2021 to advance health equity among their patient population by reducing Black maternal mortality and morbidity. In the first year of implementation, Penn Medicine saw a 29.4% decrease in pregnancy complications among Black women.
