Fortune, in collaboration with PINC AI, last week released a list of the top 100 hospitals in the United States based on an analysis of over 2,500 organizations — and 74 are Advisory Board members.
To create the lists, researchers analyzed data from 2,644 short-term, acute care, non-federal U.S. hospitals. Information was collected from Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review data, and CMS' Hospital Compare website.
To measure performance, hospitals were evaluated in five domains:
Hospitals were scored between one and five stars in each domain. Some hospitals in the top 100 also received the Everest Award for setting national benchmarks for both the fastest improvement rate and highest current year performance on the list's scorecard.
Fortune and PINC AI separated the final list of top hospitals into five categories: major teaching, teaching, large community, medium community, and small community.

According to Fortune, the hospitals on the top 100 list "bested their peers on all measures, which included patient outcomes and experience, operational efficiency, financial health, and community impact." Of the hospitals, 51 appeared on the 2022 list of the top 100 hospitals.
An analysis from PINC AI also found that if all hospitals in the United States performed at the same level as the top 100 hospitals, over 272,000 additional deaths could have been averted, and more than 432,000 patients could have avoided care complications. Hospitals could have also saved $15.7 billion in inpatient costs.
